Pupil
UXD | UX RESEARCH
Type: Individual Project Duration: 24 Hours
Pupil is a one stop platform for virtual universities to run seamlessly. Merits and advantages of the traditional offline mode of design education have been interpreted into features in a virtual classroom scenario, to provide a user experience that gets as close as possible to or even better.
Following is a 1 day version of work on this expansive theme.

OPPORTUNITIES
Being the Primary User in this context, with an online design education experience for 2 semesters of college, along with the data from primary and secondary research, the following appear to be the challenges in virtual classrooms.
VIRTUAL
CLASS
Camera and Audio have issues sometimes
Screen sharing anxiety, other work or notifications visible to the audience
I take notes and screenshots on my desktop, but end up never organising them, which means they get lost forever.
LEARNING RESOURCES
Recorded sessions load and get saved to one user's drive after sometime, it is not very prompt and accessible
Pre-recorded sessions are not available for every subject
The resources specific to modules and shared by professors, Reach the class via Class Reps, and their messages get lose in daily conversations
COLLABORATION
Forming the group itself was one of the challenging aspects of collaborative work as per the survey.
Setting up a common time to meet via multiple calls and messages on whatsapp is bothersome
Numerous whatsapp groups have been formed for multiple projects, it is constantly pinging as there is no clear line drawn between college conversations and personal conversations
STUDENT PROGRESSION
The quality of feedback suffering was a major concern with online classrooms
STUDENT IDENTITY MANAGEMENT
Students and faculties mentioned that they only remember each other as rectangle windows or a frame in a video call
Student did not know where to look for evaluation of assignments, as on university website it would only display a overall cumulative grade.
Faculties are not able to see beyond the 'just the Names' of their students from the class name sheet.
Approaching the faculty for feedback or regarding improvement in assessment is uncomfortable for many
Benefits of being a student to avail various discounts, perks or offers are not available as the student does not have a ID card issued.
The links and resources shared during a session is difficult to find once the session has ended. I have to keep asking people to share
Library access is limited on online mode so far
Communicating within the group, taking up roles, dependency on others work, sharing of resources, file sharing, assimilation work and presenting were some of the commonly mentioned challenges in a group project.
Students find it difficult to self-evaluate too
Switching the multiple other softwares and windows to facilitate class discussion, presentation or demonstration is hectic
The Drive resources can be edited and deleted by anyone with access, deletion mishaps have occured.
IDEATION
GOING TO COLLEGE
(OFFLINE)
Get ready at specified time known from the timetable
Get ready and carry all the requirements (stationary, books material)
Reach class. A good friend summarises recap of the last class before class begins.
Taking notes during the lecture
Asking questions during the lecture
Presenting work to the class
Faculty provides feedback on the presentation
Faculty shares reference material
In workshop based classes, instructor gives a live demo and students follow the process.
If its a new class, with unfamiliar faces, the instructor or any volunteer facilitates ice breakers and introductions.
GOING TO COLLEGE
(ONLINE)
Campus notifies/reminders about class on all logged in devices.
Speaker and audio health is checked and reported
Keynotes from last class is visible
Taking snapshots and notes during the lecture in a file created by the user for this specific subject within the platform
Raise of hands to ask questions during the lecture OR Questions chatbox to type in questions.
Sharing screen, work done can be imported into the platform beforehand without having to switch to multiple softwares while presenting the screen.
Faculty provides feedback on the presentation verbally, can also add sticky notes that attaches to the file being presented by the student.
Faculty shares reference material and links that gets stored in the subject folder that can be accessed by the class.
Option of having a toolkit service that can be sent to each student's address, which has the material and stationary requirements specific to the subject. Student can have this toolkit scheduled and ready in hand before the commencement of the said subject.
The platform has a Ice breaker feature, to prompt questions, pick people to answer and so on, to help the class get to know each other.
Access to the university e-library, only by the student users of that university.
The objective being to make the virtual classroom experience as good as or even better than tradition offline classrooms, it only made sense to take up the merits and advantages of the latter, interpret that in a virtual settings and derive the story for the solution concept.
IMAGINING A TRADITIONAL OFFLINE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE
1. GOING TO COLLEGE
Merits + Advantages + Nostalgia
FEATURES IN THE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM
2. COLLABORATION
COLLABORATION
(OFFLINE)
Interested students ask each other and form groups
The Group then plans a certain time and place suitable for all to meet and discuss
Group members form a whatsapp group to communicate, a drive folder to upload resources
Group members discuss the project, brainstorm the brief and start primary and secondary research.
Group members divide the roles, and start working on their part of the project and send it to the dependant group member, like relay- Over mail or on the drive
Group members sit together and work, play music and enjoy each others company.
COLLABORATION
(ONLINE)
If not for forming groups by themselves, students of the class can use the randomised group builder bot to form their groups.
Group members can schedule a calendar common to all the members on the platform
Students in a group can open a folder space which would be accessible only by the groups members
Group members discuss the project, brainstorm the brief and start primary and secondary research. The platform provides services like video call screen share, integrated services like miro and presentation softwares, file sharing on the app- all of which facilitates group work in one place.
Group members can have a work dump in the project specific folder shared by them, where each upload by an individual will be segregated according to date, time and priority that they would enter. This saves time that is spent is asking group members to send their work across.
Integration to music player is available on the platform, where the users can play music while on a live work call.
3. PROGRESS
STUDENT PROGRESSION
(OFFLINE)
Curriculum based monitoring tests. The teacher uses standardised tests that include all the material presented over the duration of the year. In case of design, the evaluation happens over assignments submitted during the course work.
The faculty checks submitted assignments or evaluates project presentations, physical or digital and grades the student.
Faculty speaks to the student if there are any concerns or feedback
The grade card is issued to the student on passing the semester
STUDENT PROGRESSION
(ONLINE)
Assignments are submitted on the submissions portal in the platform against the timeline specified by the faculty.
The faculty checks submitted assignments or evaluates project presentations, physical or digital and grades the student.
The platform allows faculty and student, to schedule calls with the intended purpose of discussion
college issued grade cards can reflect in the platform, each student can access his past and current grade cards at all times.
4. STUDENT IDENTITY
STUDENT IDENTITY MANAGEMENT
(OFFLINE)
University or college provides a ID Card to the student with a bar code for unique identification and access to resources.
Account details which are visible to all the users in the university channel
STUDENT IDENTITY MANAGEMENT
(ONLINE)
User can access the platform space purchased by the university only using the account access provided by the university at the time of their admission.
Account details which are visible to all the users in the university channel
An OTP will be sent for access to specific material from the University e-library
